Today, Hims & Hers (NYSE: HIMS) is beginning its journey as a publicly-traded company, an important step towards our vision to bring affordable, high-quality healthcare to everyone. It also marks a major milestone for Atomic.
We’re proud to have founded and funded one of the fastest-growing companies, from launch to the New York Stock Exchange in just over three years and to accelerate the future of healthcare — one that is accessible to anyone from the comfort of their phone. The company’s trajectory has been extraordinary, and speaks volumes about our co-founders Andrew, Hilary, Joe and the exceptional team they’ve built around them.
We’ve been obsessed with modernizing and improving the healthcare system since the earliest days of Atomic. Over the past decade, the largest industries like transportation, food, and travel have moved towards instant gratification and service at a push of a button. Meanwhile, arguably the most important industry to our livelihood — healthcare — has been stuck in a byzantine maze of steps, fax machines, and countless dollars and days wasted just to get people the care they need and deserve. We dreamt of an opportunity to improve this by building a digital front door to the healthcare system for the modern patient, and in just three years Hims & Hers has enabled millions of medical visits across primary care, mental health, sexual health, dermatology and even COVID-19.
“Telehealth 1.0”, led by companies like Teladoc (NYSE: TDOC), helped introduce the notion of digital care. But verticalized telehealth, “Telehealth 2.0,” led by Hims & Hers is now truly breaking down the barriers to great care with seamless diagnosis of acute conditions and treatment delivered directly to patients in the comfort of their homes. This step-function improvement to the conventional experience of being ping-ponged around within the healthcare system enabled Hims & Hers to do in its first year what took Teladoc 13 years — power 1 million medical visits and the company has already surpassed 2 million now.
While this all happened at breakneck speed, like many “overnight success stories,” the work took place behind the scenes. Hims & Hers’ humble beginnings started like all Atomic companies — with late nights prototyping, testing, validating and invalidating hypotheses in our offices in the Presidio in San Francisco and Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada. The early tests were some of the most promising we’ve ever seen at Atomic, and Andrew quickly assembled a dream team including Hilary and Joe to start building. And in just over 3 years, a remarkable company has emerged: revenue growth of 91% year over year, incredible high margins of 76% last quarter, all based on the foundation of 90% recurring, diversified revenue and strong unit economics.
With the state of the world today, it’s painfully clear that people need a better way to access trusted, high-quality healthcare. Hims & Hers has proven to be a leader in the future of healthcare, and it’s never been a more critical time to build this future together. It’s an honor to partner with Andrew and the entire team, and we’re just getting started. Congratulations to this amazing team of builders!
